Elephant Geometry: Mathematical Early Education Toys

Introduction

The Shanghai Art and Design Academy presents Elephant Geometry, a unique mathematical early education toy designed to engage and enlighten children over four years old. Inspired by the traditional Chinese story "Cao Chong Weighs the Elephant," this innovative toy combines the concept of "equivalent replacement" with area algorithms, providing an interactive way for children to learn about shape matching and area calculation.

Elephant Geometry stands out among other educational toys with its focus on mathematical enlightenment. By using single triangular and square magnetic accretion blocks, children can create various irregular patterns, such as animals and fruits, that they can relate to. The number of blocks used in each pattern corresponds to the area calculation, allowing children to grasp the concept of area in a hands-on and enjoyable way.

The production of Elephant Geometry involves the use of ABS, magnetic discs, and paper. The implementation technology includes CNC processing, painting, and 3D printing for the building blocks. The toy's dimensions are 327mm long, 232mm wide, and 48mm high. The building blocks consist of isosceles right triangles with side lengths of 10mm and 20mm, as well as squares with side lengths of 10mm and 20mm.

With the help of a small card instruction manual, children can follow step-by-step guidance to play the game, starting from simple patterns and gradually progressing to more complex ones. The A4-sized large card can be inserted into the toy, and children can piece together the pattern through the silhouette shapes on the card. The calculation formula provided on the card allows children to calculate the area of the pattern. Additionally, the magnetic absorption white board allows children to doodle their own shapes and create their own works of art. The collage board and building blocks are equipped with magnetic plates, enabling the blocks to be easily attached to the board. Once completed, the frame can be placed on a table for display or decoration, fostering a sense of achievement and self-confidence in children.

The Elephant Geometry project will take place from March 2022 to March 2023 in Shanghai. Extensive research on elementary school mathematics has been conducted to ensure the toy's appropriateness for the target age group. Overcoming challenges such as the adsorption strength of the magnetic disks and the thickness of the acrylic plate, the designers have created a toy that combines education and entertainment seamlessly.

Elephant Geometry has been recognized for its excellence in design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products Design category in 2023. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Elephant Geometry's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world by providing fulfillment and positive experiences for children.
